Grads on the Ground - Graduate Water and Flood Consultant, Tess Webb-Jones

15 March 2024

For the past 4 years, Lucion has supported event organisers, OSB events, as Sustainability Partner to the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon, providing Environmental Social Governance and sustainability benchmarking and goals for the annual event. A team of Lucion runners took on the CHM 2024, in aid of Mesothelioma UK. Following the successful event, Tess Webb-Jones, Graduate Water and Flood Consultant, provides an insight into her participation at this year’s race.

"Hi! Grad on the Ground, Tess Webb-Jones here!

I have been working within the Water team for four months now, and during this time I have had the privilege of working on a vast array of flood projects, each presenting its own unique set of challenges and opportunities.

As well as working on our diverse range of projects, I also had an unforgettable experience at a recent company event. On Sunday 3rd March 2024, I took part in my first half marathon; The Cambridge Half Marathon 2024. The vibrant atmosphere and overwhelming support at the event showcased the power of collective encouragement. To fuel the team spirit, I organised a pre-race dinner for colleagues. It was a wonderful opportunity to get people together to prepare for the challenge awaiting us the next day.

The event itself was an amazing experience, especially due to the sustainability focus, supported by Lucion as Sustainability Partner. Initiatives included using recyclable paper cups at the water stations and special bins for used energy gel packets so they can be recycled separately into new products, including play equipment. Sustainability is incredibly important at large-scale events, and it’s exciting to be working for a company who can support in this way. This year the event was zero waste to landfill, which was a brilliant achievement. Additionally, Lucion runners managed to raise over £2,200 for Mesothelioma UK. It’s not too late to sponsor us, visit our Just Giving page, here!

I am also currently spearheading the charity coordination efforts for the Manchester office in the Keep Britain Tidy ‘Great British Spring Clean’ campaign. This initiative aims to bring colleagues together to partake in a meaningful activity that contributes to a cleaner and more sustainable environment. Our Manchester based colleagues will be taking part in this on 20th March.

I have been thoroughly enjoying the diversity accompanying my role and I’m looking forward to getting involved in future events and opportunities that may arise along my career path!"

Our Water and Flood Services

Flood Risk can have significant impact on people, property and the environment. Public awareness of these effects is increasing due to the high media profile of floods.

We are experts in a range of flood risk management areas, from transactional due diligence to Flood Risk Assessments (FRA) and associated Environmental Statement (ES) Chapters for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).

Our principal aim is to support our corporate and investor clients by assessing risk from all sources of flooding, providing due diligence and technical advice on flood risk including mitigation measures and residual risks and supporting our developer clients during the planning process.

Our team assess the risk of flooding from all sources (tidal, fluvial, surface water, groundwater, reservoirs, sewers and canals), evaluate this in a transactional context, or ensure the development is safe from flooding, without exacerbating risk locally or downstream.
