Lucion’s webinar provides useful guidance on asbestos, safety, compliance and sustainability in hospitals and NHS Buildings

3 November 2021

Lucion Environmental presented at the NHS Estates & Facilities Conference 2021 on 2nd November 2021 to provide practical guidance and advice on a range of issues around asbestos, safety, compliance and sustainability in hospitals and NHS Buildings.

Organised by Convenzis, it was the latest in a series of conferences providing policy-led updates to the attendees based on the current challenges and issues faced by estates and facilities managers and leaders across the UK.

The latest conference titled ‘Managing Demand and Innovation’ included multiple live keynote presentations and live examples of both NHS and Commercial best practices.

Presenters at the conference included senior civil servants, private sector experts, and academics, discussing the latest initiatives and projects along with case studies and comments on best practices.

Lucion’s presentation was led by Head of Business Development, Kimberley Johnson and was ably supported by Area Director for North of UK, Neil Smethurst.

In their presentation, Kimberley and Neil touched upon a wide range of topics of concern to duty holders with insights and tips on identifying asbestos, communicating the findings and taking remedial actions.

Hospitals and NHS Buildings built between the 1950s and 1985 are at the highest risk which contains Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) in lagging, sprayed asbestos, asbestos-insulating boards, thermal insulation, floor tiles, cement roofing/guttering and textured coatings. This makes it important that experts in asbestos consultancy, such as Lucion, with extensive knowledge of asbestos within educational properties, are engaged to assess the risk within premises depending on the building age, build type and use.

The presentation included a simplified 7-steps journey to compliance in order to protect patients, visitors and staff.

As the UK aims to become carbon net-zero by 2050 there is growing importance and requirement to reduce the carbon footprint of our buildings and projects. In NHS Estate Buildings, a key impact is energy use. So going forward, the healthcare buildings face the challenge of retrofitting energy-efficient systems into historic estates.

Kim and Neil highlighted the key considerations to ensure the supply chain is committed to sustainability.

Following the presentation, our speakers answered audience questions in a live Q&A session read out by the host and which highlighted the practical guidance and the latest, best practice approaches to dealing with asbestos in healthcare buildings.

Some of the questions covered during the webinar included:

  • How often should asbestos awareness training be taken?
  • What platforms to use for asbestos awareness training?
  • What steps need to be taken when asbestos is identified on-site?
  • When do you get compliant with CAR 2012?

You can find more details on the discussions highlighted above and much more in the webinar recording available at the following link:
