Holistic environmental services provider, Lucion Services, celebrates successful year with Lightfoot

11 February 2022

It has been one year since the introduction of the Lightfoot in-vehicle driver efficiency technology and rewards platform to Lucion’s fleet of 172 vans.

Since the introduction of Lightfoot, award-winning, government-supported technology that helps make roads safer, environment cleaner and motoring less expensive, our team have saved £14,000 in fuel costs and 31.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions (that’s equivalent to 4,665,000 cups of tea).

Rewarding better drivers through cash incentives, Lightfoot is a fleet management solution that not only has improved the safety of our drivers - aligned with our mission to protect people and planet - but also reduces our carbon footprint. Lightfoot has delivered on all fronts whilst also reducing instances of harsh acceleration, harsh braking, and harsh cornering.

How does Lightfoot technology work?

Developed in partnership with the Institute of Advanced Motorists and leading driver-behaviour experts at the University of Bath, the technology comes in the form of a pocket-sized dashboard display device (known as the ‘fitbit’ for cars) which connects to the vehicle’s computer and uses live engine data to provide our drivers with real-time visual and audible feedback.

Using advanced, real-time engine analytics which take account of different factors such as load and road gradient; Lightfoot provides live, in-cab coaching, helping drivers improve both efficiency and safety, and rewarding them for being better.

This guides drivers to the ‘sweet spot of the engine’, improving both engine performance and safety on the roads. The audible end of journey score from the device also enables drivers to strive towards achieving Lightfoot’s Elite Driver status score of 85 or more, which unlocks access to weekly prize draws.

Lucion’s Technical Director Chris Parr commented:

"By educating and giving our drivers the 'heads-up' through the Lightfoot in-cab system and app our drivers can take control of their driving style and identify where they can improve, this benefit is two-fold with improved awareness and more considered, considerate driving plus improved efficiency"

The future’s bright

When we first introduced the Lightfoot system to Lucion drivers, our initial target was for all Lucion drivers to be striving to achieve Elite Driver status. When a driver achieves Elite Driver status, safety improves dramatically and the greatest impact can be made in terms of performance and emissions. The lower than perfect Elite Driver score of 85+ allows for necessary acceleration on slip roads, at roundabouts and on busy junctions, so that drivers can pull away safely and still achieve an “Elite” journey. We are pleased to report that 81.7% of our drivers have achieved Elite Driver status during the past year, with an average Lightfoot score across all drivers of 87.9%.

Additionally, we are pleased to report that our drivers’ average percentage of idle time decreased by 5.7% - 10% during the past year, contributing to our 31.5 tonnes of CO2 emission reduction. Based on these estimations and our predicted company growth, we expect nearly a thousand tonnes of CO2 will be stopped from entering the Earth’s atmosphere over a five year period. This is equivalent to the carbon captured by over a thousand acres of forest a year.

Lucion’s Chief Technical Officer Ross Boulton commented on the system stating:

"The environmental impact that can be achieved through changing our habits is huge. Technology is enabling us, but it is dependent on the long-term commitment of companies and individuals. The need to be proactive in adapting the way we drive is now more important than ever.

We are determined to see us further progress towards our ESG goals of our business. 2022 will see us invest in our 'beyond carbon neutral' objectives. Lightfoot’s innovative technology has allowed Lucion to take the necessary steps to reaching our carbon goals.”
